Why I dont like lyrics of Hush little baby

27. ledna 2013 v 14:27 | k
Hush, little baby, don't say a word, Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird.
And if that mockingbird don't sing, Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring.
And if that diamond ring turns brass, Mama's gonna buy you a looking glass.
And if that looking glass gets broke, Mama's gonna buy you a billy goat,
And if that billy goat doesn't pull, Mama's gonna buy you a cart and bull.
And if that cart and bull turn over, Mama's gonna buy you a dog named Rover.
And if that dog named Rover won't bark, Mama's gonna buy you a horse and cart.
And if that horse and cart fall down, Well you'll still be the sweetest baby in town.

My objection is aimed toward one word which is repeated in every verse of mentioned lullaby.
What irritates me is the presence of the word "to buy". Don't get me wrong, I consider this verb to be
completely allright, but definitely not in lullaby, the music form the kids are exposed to the most during their
earliest days.
They should not be confronted with such complicated things as they have no idea what the value of money is
and how the whole process of earing and saving it works.
At first place I would at least replace the word ''to buy'' by ''to get'', ''to bring'', ''to give''... Simply anything
would be better than "purchasing".

For that reason, initially I found this song propriate only for newborns and toddlers who don't understand what
their mothers are actually singing about.

But later I realised another thing.

Even if we forget for a moment that the child doesn't understand the lyrics, we cannot deny that the first
words which baby say are the ones which have been repeated to it the most. It is inavoidable process and
unless you are from twisted greedy business family you don't wish to hear just a while after your offspring
started to talk:''Mom! Dad! Buy!"
At some point, these innocent little people evenutally must find out what is shopping about, but it is wise to
keep them away from this at least for a year or two.

Now, let's take a look at another aspect of the song-objects which are meant to be donated.
In first verse, mum is willing to buy a mocking bird which is very sweet and poetic. In following verse she rises
the bar extremely high-she is talking about a diamond. Diamond? Seriously? For a toddler?
Not mentioning that definitely not everybody posseses cart, horse or diamond, anyway it seem to be slightly
crazy.
I, myself, am trying to convince my closest ones (including parents) to buy me amazing diamond ring when I
will reach the age of 20, but I belive that if your 2 years old daughter would ask you for the same (or worse,
she would ask for it Santa Clause) you would not be excited to hear from her this very kind of request. And
because she would be only 2 years old and she wouldn't receive what she wanted immadietely, what would she
do? Demand it in very persuative way: by screaming, yelling and crying.
You will save youself much time and patience by not using the original words of "Hush".

As soon as your child learn to use imperative you will hear it all the time. And trust me, that time will come.
Don't rush teaching them the vocabulary you wish not to hear often.

And the last critics is connected with "exchange".
If something happens to the given thing (or more likely to the broken one, because that is what the kids do) it
will be simply replaced by another.
Honestly, I have never ever heard my mom saying: "That's allright that you broke it. You will get a new one. Or
maybe even something better." You would have to be very liberal (or may a say too much liberal?) to support
such an activity of anybody.

Anyway, I have no objection against the half of the last verse.

Actually.....the sweetest one in the whole town? So your mom is already planning a model carrier for you kiddo?
Oh, I don't envy you that...
